Reflections

I am inspired to help save the marine ecosystem by protecting the sharks and corals, as well as try and do things to help their population regrow. This is because the people guiding us have been passionate about what they do, which made me want to do something about the dire situation. There are some ways which I can start from, like convincing my parents and relatives to avoid consuming shark fin soup so as to reduce the demand in some ways. (Nah Jie Han)

When we went shopping, I bought a shark tooth necklace. It looked real nice, but it was bad as I was promoting the exploitation of sharks. There were also souvenirs there that were made from sea shells and oyster shells, which is also bad as they are removing vital things integral to the marine eco-system. I guess this is why educating of the locals is also important as well as finding alternatives. (Eusebius)

At Gili Trawangan, we met Delphine and learnt more about coral reefs, their importance and threats faced by them as well as the work she is doing in order to restore the reefs. We also took part in making a small Bio-rock with our school's logo. (Odelia Goh)

I was interviewed by the media about what we did. I felt that by answering these questions, I have made a greater impact and that the act of beach-cleaning may spread over Indonesia. (Sandeep)

I am inspired to avoid eating shark products such as shark's fin soup, as well as persuade others to do likewise. (Timothy Ng)

The marine eco-system will affect everyone if the current trend of destruction and damage continues. The far reaching effects which will cascade and snowball into huge problems can still be prevented with everyone's cooperation. (Jeremiah Ong Ray)

However, tourism may instead damage the coral reefs as seen today when the fisherman tossed his anchor wrongly at them. Additionally, inexperienced snorkelers may damage the coral reefs when there is contact. (Shawnn Tan)

I am inspired to do my part to helping save not only the sharks or reefs but all of the ocean. As a long term goal, I plan to become a marine biologist to help the sea, educating people everywhere about saving their world. (Ancel Chong)

The construction of the Bio-rock was interesting as it made us work our brains to think of a design that is feasible with limited resources. We also had to think of the suitability of the Bio-rock when it is put under the sea. All in all, the experience was fun and interesting as we had to think of many ways to come up with a feasible plan. (Dion Low)
